Junior Reps – Flegg – NSW Cup

By Steve Mavin for Bunnies TV.

The Rabbitohs first grade put in a 2nd half to forget in Las Vegas, losing 36-24 to the Sea Eagles. We did see some great footy played by our team but unfortunately the loss is all that will be remembered as the season progresses.

Congratulations to Jacob Gagai for scoring a nice try on debut after a Trell Mit bullet hit him in stride. ‘Gags’ had a bit to do, beating Jaxson Paulo to dive over. Excellent! Congrats also to Alex Johnston for scoring his 188th career try. ‘AJ’ needs just 3 more to pass Billy Slater and move up to 2nd place. He needs 25 more to surpass Ken Irvines 212 all time mark. Can he do it this year?

Next up is a tough away game against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday 14th March.

Alex Johnston and Ken Irvine rugbu league legends.
Alex Johnston needs 25 more tries to overtake Ken Irvine.

Six South Sydney Rabbitohs games are scheduled for this Saturday the 9th of March. All four Junior Reps teams will be in action in round 6 at Redfern Oval against the Bears. In round 1 of the Jersey Flegg Cup and NSW Cup we take on the Sea Eagles and Blacktown Sea Eagles at 4 Pines Park (Brookvale Oval).

Redfern Oval v Bears – Saturday 9th March

Lisa Fiaola Cup 9:30am (Bunnies TV)

The 12th placed Bears are yet to win a game and have scored only 14 points in their 4 matches (1 bye) of the 2024 season. They also have the worst defence in the competition, conceding 190 points to date. The Rabbitohs have won 1 and lost 4. We have scored 64 points and conceded 112.

All stats aside this Souths Lisa Fiaola under 17s team is competing in their 1st season so it’s reasonable to expect a few teething problems. Yes indeed more wins are coming, hopefuly starting this weekend.

Tarsha Gale Cup 11:00am (Bunnies TV)

The 11th placed Bears are yet to win a game and just like their younger counterparts they too have only scored 14 points in their 4 appearances. They have conceded 150 points. Our Tarsha Gale team are also winless, scoring 46 points while conceding an alarming 182, the 2nd worst in the competition.

This Rabbitohs under 19s team has talent in the ranks and they can score points. If they can defend their line better then improved performances will come.

Harold Matthews Cup 12:30pm

The 14th placed Bears are yet to win a game but did manage a 12 all draw with the Storm in round 1. The 15th placed Rabbitohs have just the 1 victory but sit lower on the table due to the Bears having the bye.

The moment a 2nd win was snatched away by a rampaging Lennox Tuiloma.

Souths coach Yoni Charlupski watched in horror last week when a late Warriors try ruined what had been an improved performance from his team. Souths led 16-4 but let the game slip away. The team certainly needs to pay more attention to the effort areas.

Jacob Khalil replaces Tony Fakahau on the bench. The Bears have added 9 new faces to their squad.

The Harold Matthews Cup side to play North Sydney is:

1- Darcy Feltham
2- Max Gioiello
3- Lisiate Mackay-Filihia

SG Ball Cup 2:00pm

The Rabbitohs sit 13th on the ladder with 1 win and 4 losses. Souths have slighly better attacking and defensive numbers but they will need to keep improving each week especially in defence. The Sharks scored 52 against them last week and the Warriors scored 44 the week before.

Powerful prop Jason Hallie has been named to start in the 21 jersey. Setefano Sele, Dayne Fallon and Bailey Smith have been included on the extended bench.
