Souths Rep Forward To Return

“Im good to go this week” were the words Souths fans were waiting to hear from Junior Tatola in todays press conference at Redfern Oval. The other two players that fronted the media were Alex Johnston and Thomas Burgess.

I was at Redfern Oval this morning along with Grant Chappell. We watched the team train from the grandstand then Chaps moved down near the tunnel and had a good chat to Shaquai Mitchell. Later, Chaps asked the questions in the press conference while I operated our camcorder.

Junior Tatola

Tevita ‘Junior’ Tatola kicked off his NRL career in round 1 of the 2018 season. He has given the club great value as a front rower, playing at least 20 games every year since his debut season.

Junior will play against the Roosters on Friday night.

Junior was knocked out in the first minute of the Rabbitohs round 1 win over the Sharks. His high work rate, solid middle defence and tough carries were missed in last weeks loss to the Panthers. The goods news he gave us today is that he will make a welcome return against the Roosters.

Thomas Burgess

Thomas Burgess answered questions from the media that included Grant Chappell.

When asked about the racial slur at Penrith Park directed at his teammate Thomas Burgess said “People really need to think before they say things”.

Big Tommy Burgess at Redfern today.

Thomas Burgess made his NRL debut in round 13, 2013 for Souths after playing 45 games for Bradford in the UK. On Friday he will play his 212th game and move past the great Bob McCarthy (211) into 4th place all time for the club.

Alex Johnston

When Chaps asked Alex Johnston if he’s looking forward to the big rivalry game he said “Yeah it’s that time of year again against the Chooks at Trellianz. It should be a good match and we’re looking forward to it”.

AJ made a try scoring debut for Souths in round 8 of the 2014 NRL season. He scored his 167th career try last week against the Panthers. In doing so he passed Andrew Ettingshausen and moved to 5th on the all time try scoring list. Next up for AJ is Brett Morris (176) and Steve Menzies (180). “I guess it’s pretty cool” said AJ “I just want to tick them off one by one and do my job for the team”.

One try at a time.

AJ has scored 17 times against the Roosters, the most tries he’s scored against any opposition team.

Latrell Mitchell didn’t train with the team. He spent the session working one on one with a trainer. At the end of the session Latrell practiced his goal kicking and dropouts. He also made some time to have a chat and kick a few balls with 2 young boys out on the field.
