Jye Gray To Play

By Steve Mavin for Bunnies TV.

The suspension of Latrell Mitchell has paved the way for young Queenslander Jye Gray to make his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs at fullback. Tyrone Munro makes his return from injury and Peter Mamouzelos has been named to start at hooker. Siliva Havili, Shaq Mitchell and Davvy Moale all return. Damien Cook, Tallis Duncan and Sean Keppie are named on the extended bench.

I’ve had my eye on Jye since early last year in 2023 when I was filming him playing 5/8 for our SG Ball team. It only took a few appearances for me to be convinced that this young bloke is a special talent. Jye was consistently carving up the opposition and so was his teammate Tyrone Munro.

Tyrone would famously progress through the grades and make a try scoring debut in first grade later that same year. Jyes’ fortunes went the other way. He tore his hamstring while in full flight on his way to scoring a try.

Jye Gray might be small in stature, but he is big on talent. In February he played a starring role at fullback in the Charity Shield and has scored 3 tries in 4 appearances in NSW Cup.

A Dream Come True

In 2023 Gray said “From a young age I’ve always looked up to small players cause I am a small player like Alfie Langer. I didn’t obviously get to watch a lot of his era in the league. I watched a lot of highlights and stuff and watching him, how he played gives me inspiration to hopefully do the same. Just take it step by step kind of thing.

That is my dream, that’s always been my dream as a young boy growing up to put on the Rabbitohs jersey in the NRL side. That’s the goal but I just follow my steps and my goals. My little goals and hopefully I can reach that big goal at the end, that milestone.”

Hard work has paid off for Jye Gray.

Ty Ty & Pete

There are high hopes for Tyrone Munro in 2024. His pace and try scoring ability are a huge asset to this team. Pete Mamouzelos spent most of last weeks clash with the Warriors on the bench prompting fans to ask why? This week Damien Cook is 18th man so Pete will get more minutes in the game and probably get a rest in the middle from Havili.

A Club In Turmoil

South sit at the bottom of the NRL table, the coach is under fire and our players are being blasted for their lack of quality performances. Last week against the Bulldogs the team proved that if they get the simple stuff right then the rest will come. Holding the ball, limiting errors and playing smart disciplined footy are essential. Rolling up the sleeves and ripping into the hard work would help a lot too. However in 2024 this has happened just once in 5 matches. On Saturday night the club will be hoping that a few key inclusions in the lineup will be enough to turn things around.

A few Jye Gray highlights.
