Tonight at Accor Stadium, Thomas Burgess will captain the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs when they take on the Bulldogs. Tom’s big brother Sam Burgess captained the club 51 times between 2012-19.

On this weeks Team List Tuesday show the question was asked by live chatter ‘yumm’ – “Has any other brothers both captained the Rabbitohs?”

At yesterdays captains run I found out the answer is yes.

Only two other sets of siblings have captained the club, Clarrie Horder (1919-21 for 10 games) and his brother, club icon Harold Horder (1924 for 4 games). Also the legendary Jack Lawrence (1924 for 5 games) and Victor Lawrence (1928 for 5 games).

Tom and Sam Burgess will now join this rare family club.

Emma Lawrence just metres away!

Ironically the moment I learned this news, a relative, Emma Lawrence from Channel 9 was standing just metres away ready to interview Rabbitohs head coach Jason Demetriou!

Unquestionably a club great, Tom Burgess will have the C next to his name on Saturday night.

Above all else, a big thank you to Jeremy Monahan for pointing out the all time captains list that he helped compile on the Rabbitohs website.

For The Record

Clarrie ‘ Spot’ Horder was first grade player number #64. He played 98 games, scored 50 tries and kicked 14 goals. Harold Horder #61 played 98 games, scored an incredible 102 tries and kicked 77 goals.

Jack Lawrence was Rabbitoh #100 with 63 appearances, 15 tries and 41 goals for the club between 1920-28. Victor Lawrence #117 played for Waterloo before going on to play 95 games and scored 47 tries also between 1920-28.

Jack and Vic Lawrence captained the club in 1924 and 1928 respectively.

Both Jack and Victor Lawrence won multiple premierships while playing for the Rabbitohs – 1925, 1926, 1927 and 1928. In time this is regarded as one of the golden eras for the club.

Sam Burgess #1073 played 182 first grade games for Souths during his amazing career, scoring 44 tries. Tom Burgess #1096 has played 222 games for the Bunnies with 17 tries. Alongside Sam, Tom is now unquestionably considered a club great having made the 3rd most appearances all time.

Sam, Tom and George Burgess all played in the Rabbitohs 2014 premiership win over the Bulldogs.

The legendary Lawrence’s.

In conclusion I would like to wish big Tommy the best of luck against the Bulldogs. Go get em mate!!
