The 1978 Amco Cup
The South Sydney Rabbitohs took on the Western Division Rams in round 2 of the Amco Cup at Leichhardt Oval on the 17th of May 1978.

The Rabbitohs won the match 22-9, eliminating the NSW country team from the competition.

The curtain raiser that day was a round 2 Amco Shield clash. Benedict College, Auburn took on the Patrician Brothers, Fairfield team. The two number 6s that day would both then go on to play first grade. Michael Pobjie (Rabbitoh #703) and the legendary Parramatta Eel Peter Sterling.
The Bunnies went on to defeat Northern Division 9-5 in round 3 at Scully Park, Tamworth before crashing out in a narrow 11-9 loss to the Manly Silvertails at Lang Park, Brisbane.
Manly would go on to win the NSWRL competition later in the year beating the Sharks 16-0 in the famous Grand Final replay.

The 1978 Amco Cup final was won by the Roosters who defeated the Dragons 16-4 at Leichhardt Oval.

History
The Amco Cup (subsequently known by various other sponsors’ names including the Tooth Cup, KB Cup, National Panasonic Cup and Panasonic Cup) was a mid-week rugby league competition held in Australia between 1974 and 1989. The format was usually a straight knock-out.
After seeing our Amco Cup program on Facebook Paul Davo said – “I was at the game and went back to Kempsey telling my mates ‘I have just seen a long haired halfback that will play for Australia’
Some doubted me, but the rest is history. One of the best, Sterlo 👍👍
Sterlos teammate Brett Lobb & Mick Pobjies’ captain Michael Duke would also play first grade.
