Team List Tuesday – Ron Coote Cup

Jed Cartwright drops out of the 17 to make way for the return of Hame Sele. Daniel Suluka-Fifita is the other Rabbitoh to make way for Junior Tatola.

The Bunnies TV trio were all at Redfern today. I briefly spoke to Jacob Host who told me he should be back next week. When asked about his hamstring Jai Arrow said “It’s getting there, hopefully back next week”.

Ron Coote

Ron Coote is a rugby league legend that won 4 premierships with the Rabbitohs and 2 with the Roosters.

Coote could do it all on the field but a feature of his game were his incredible cover tackles. Players rarely escaped when a flying Ronny Coote had them in his sights.

The Ron Coote Cup was first held in 2007 and is decided by the aggregate score of the two matches played each season. To date the Rabbitohs hold a 9-7 win record and have won the last 5.

This is a local derby that fans and players hold in the highest regard. It’s a long standing tradition of Sydneys south versus east. A game that both clubs are always desperate to win and over the years we’ve been blessed with some amazing, dramatic results.

118 Year Rivalry

Friday night at Allianz Stadium will be the 230th meeting between the two foundation clubs in their 118 year history of clashes.

‘Teddy v Trell’, star fullbacks James Tedesco & Latrell Mitchell will go head to head on Friday night.

Souths hold a 120-104 lead with 5 draws. During my career last century (it’s ancient history I know), I used to love meeting the Chooks and actually played in 6 of those 120 wins.

Win number 120 was an epic contest in week 1 of the 2022 final series. In a brutal encounter, 8 players spent time in the sin bin before we eliminated our tri coloured neighbours in a 30-16 victory.

Souths won a brutal encounter in the 2022 finals series.

NRL Round 3 Roosters v Rabbitohs

Heading into round 3 both teams are on 2 competition points with one win and one loss. Souths are in the midst of a tough draw meeting competition heavyweights the Sharks and Panthers wheras the Roosters met the supposedly lower ranks sides the Dolpins and Warriors.

The Dolphins win over the Roosters in round one will be remembered as one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition. Another Dolphins win in round 2 over the Raiders has put the league world on notice. The new kids on the block maybe better than most imagined they would be. Not a single person on the planet, besides maybe Wayne Bennett had the Dolphins on top of the NRL ladder after 2 rounds but that is exactly where they sit.

Stop The Booing

A Jaxson Paulo double on the right wing was the difference for the Roosters in their 20-12 win over the Warriors. Souths fans will no doubt be keeping an eye on the former Rabbitoh Paulo on Friday night. They won’t however be booing him like the Chooks crowd seem intent on doing to Latrell Mitchell. This disturbing trend among their fans needs to be called out for what it is, stupidity. I call on the Roosters fans to consider the events at half time at BlueBet Stadium last Thursday night before they open their mouths for no good reason on Friday.

At yesterdays press conference Thomas Burgess said “People really need to think before they say things”.

Trellianz Stadium.

Latrell played in 2 Grand Final wins for the Roosters, doesn’t that warrant some respect from their fans? I know that if he wins 2 comps for Souths I will forever be grateful, regardless of if he moves on. A change of clubs does not warrants this unrelenting childish abuse. Get over it and just let Latrell play footy.
