The Coach – Graham ‘Nigsy’ Hill – The Interview
On the 17th of January 2023 Graham ‘Nigsy’ Hill and his son Brent sat down for a chat with us in the Bunnies TV studio.
‘Nigsy’ as he is affectionately known, is a legendary coach in the Souths Juniors district. The list of players he has coached is a whos who of rugby league stars. Mario Fenech, Jim Sedaris, Terry Hill and Ian Roberts to name a few are all Souths Juniors who played under Nigsy.
A Remarkable Memory
For a man that is 76 years old, Nigsy has a remarkable memory of every team he has coached. He can remember team line-ups, game scores and details that most of us would have long forgotten.
During our interview, Brent showed Nigsy photos covering 20 years of teams he has coached. What followed was a fascinating recollection of the highs and lows of each squad he encountered. The interview was shot in one take for over 90 minutes. Due to the lenght of time we have divided the most compelling team stories into a series.
The Coach Episode 1 – 1976 SG Ball Champions
“This was a great team” was how Nigsy described his all conquering 1976 SG Ball team. Part 1 in our series premiered at 6pm on Monday 30th of January. Part 2 featuring the 1988 team will premiere at 6pm on the 31st of January.
The Coach Series
Episodes 3 & 4 are coming soon and later episodes will feature teams that both myself and my co-host Darren Brown played in. We plan on releasing around 7 or 8 parts in the series. On top of that we’ll clip up selected footage to share as YouTube Shorts and across our social network.
The Hills
Nigsy coached me in the Souths SG Ball system for 2 years (I played up a grade my first year). We both lived in Botany so I would often walk around to his house to get a lift to training at Mascot Oval.
Nigsys wife Margaret and daughters Rachel & Donna were always good to me and up for a chat. Son Brent is not suprisingly a talented junior coach and now works behind the scenes for the Rabbitohs, unearthing rubgy league stars of the future.
