Sam Burgess Steps Away
The Rabbitohs released Sam Burgess today amid the multiple dramas that are unfolding at the club. Assistant coach John Morris has not been shown the door. He will take his place next to head coach Jason Demetriou and fellow assistant Ben Hornby when the team takes on the Roosters next Friday at Accor Stadium.

Bunnies TV wishes Sam all the best when he takes over at Warrington and also with the impending birth of his baby with partner Lucy.

Rabbitohs Statement
The Rabbitohs have agreed with Sam Burgess today that he will be released from his assistant coaching duties for the remainder of the season. This will allow him to concentrate on his forthcoming role with the Warrington Wolves and the impending birth of his child.
“The South Sydney Rabbitohs thank Sam for his valuable contribution to the Club as assistant coach. I join with all Rabbitohs Members and supporters in wishing him every success at Warrington,” Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly said.

“We also wish him and partner Lucy all the best with the birth of their child in the coming weeks.”
Sam Burgess Statement
Sam Burgess said: “I’ve made the decision to step away from South Sydney, given the circumstances. “My immediate focus is the upcoming birth of our baby and preparing for my new role at Warrington.”

The Rabbitohs have a bye this weekend and are readying themselves for their important final regular season match against the Sydney Roosters on Friday 1 September at Accor Stadium. This will be under the leadership of Head Coach Jason Demetriou and assistant coaches Ben Hornby and John Morris.

Jason Demetriou Statement
Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou was adamant that he did not force Sam Burgess out of the club.
“I didn’t want Sam out of the club, no. But it is what it is, the decision has been made and we move on,” Demetriou said.
“Sam and I had many discussions, it’s not something I’m going to talk about publicly, they’re discussions between Sam and I and I’m sure Sam will respect that as well.

“We all have differences, I had many conversations with Wayne Bennett and every coach I’ve worked with, we all have differences. But there’s a lot more external factors as well with him about to take the job at Warrington and he’s about to have a baby as well. They’re all factors that pour into it but my focus is to get the team ready for two weeks time.”
The Legend
Sam Burgess arrived at South Sydney in 2010 from Bradford. This then set the wheels in motion on the road to premiership glory in 2014.
Burgess added a rock solid mobile try scoring big body to the Rabbitohs squad. His value was unquestionably immense and the opposition often had no answer for the Englishman. A broken jaw and a Clive Churchill medal in that magic decider were iconic moments. Sam is a player that will thus never be forgotten by Souths fans like me.
Sams arrival as a coach this year helped young guns like Tallis Duncan finally develop into first grade stars. It’s a real shame that Burgess has left to take up the Warrington job but let’s hope one day he returns to Souths to work with the club again.
