Ethan Ferguson Shines In Rabbitohs Debut

Souths new recruit Ethan Ferguson has been described as one of the brightest young centres in rugby league. At Redfern Oval yesterday he certainly stood out in his first game in the red and green.

Ferguson scored a great try at Redfern yesterday.

Ferguson scored an undeniably great try, kicked an impressive goal from the sideline, made a try saving tackle and showcased his fine rugby league skills on multiple occasions.

18 year old Ferguson hails from Taree and is the cousin of Latrell and Shaquai Mitchell. He is a Newcastle Knights junior, an Australian Schoolboy representative and played SG Ball for the Knights this year.

I live streamed yesterday’s Jersey Flegg clash between the Rabbitohs and Storm. The home side went down 22-20 but the talents of Ethan Ferguson were impossible to miss.

The Run

An early Storm turnover saw Ferguson burst away down the eastern sideline. He then disposed of 2 would be defenders before offloading to Tyrone Munro in support. Young guns Ferguson and Munro have the potential to form a lethal left side combination as they progress through the grades.

The Try

A first half left side raid saw Ferguson pull in an offload, regather his own kick and beat 4 defenders on the way to scoring his first try for the club. It was a jaw dropping moment for all who witnessed it.

The Tackle

In the 2nd half the Rabbitohs were under repeated pressure from a surprisingly talented Storm team. Another right side attacking play from the visitors was stamped out when Ferguson flew out of the defensive line to shut down the danger with a heavy tackle that floored the Storm player.

Ferguson was put on report for high contact but when I slowed down the replay I failed to see any contact above the shoulders. The Storm player began to fall as Ferguson approached so in my opinion he will have no case to answer for the tackle.

The Goal

A southerly breeze was blowing as Ferguson lined up a conversion from the sideline. The young centre has a unique kicking style that sees him begin close to the ball before walking back then forward to make contact. Ferguson stuck the kick beautifully, starting the ball out to the right for the wind to then bring it back over the crossbar. It was another highlight that I captured live and free on Bunnies TV.

The Skill

Late in the game the Rabbitohs then began to chance their hand. An attacking push from deep in their own territory saw Tyrone Munro stand in the tackle and pass the ball to his support runner. The ball went high in the air but was hauled in with one hand effortlessly by Ferguson. He then charged down the field, stood in the tackle and offloaded to his support despite being held by 2 defenders.

It was a sparkling overall debut by Ferguson. He is destined to undoubtedly become a South Sydney Rabbitohs fan favourite.
