Bob McCarthy Picks Next Immortal & Praises Tom
The great former Rabbitoh Bob McCarthy was at Redfern today. Bob was sitting right next to our Bunnies TV vantage point so we invited the legendary try scoring forward to come up for a brief chat.
Bob congratulated Thomas Burgess for the achievement of passing his 211 game mark. Tom will leapfrog Bob and move to 4th on the all time list when he plays his 212th game tomorrow night. Bob did however point out that his 211 first grade games were all 80 minute performances.
Back when players like Bob and myself were running around there was no interchange like there is today. This meant that if you were picked in the team you played the entire game.
Thomas Burgess would average around 40 minutes per game meaning that for him to pass the same amount of game time as Bob he would need to play closer to 400 games!
Rabbitohs Most Games Played
1. John Sutton 336
2. Adam Reynolds 231
3. Nathan Merritt 218
4. Bob McCarthy 211
5. Thomas Burgess 211
The Next Immortal
On Friday night the Rabbitohs will take on the Roosters in the Ron Coote Cup.
Chaps asked Bob about his mate Ronny and he said: “Ron played in 9 grand finals, captained Australia, captained Souths, captained the Roosters, captained NSW. Should be an immortal that’s only my opinion. Ronny I think deep down he’s still a Souths bloke…he should have been there before (Arthur) Beetson”.
For what it’s worth I agree with Bobbys opinion on Ron Coote. Ronny is as deserving of the honour as just about every other immortal named to date. Ron Coote is also one of the best blokes you will ever meet, a champion on and off the field.

Ron Coote should have been given the nod long before Andrew Johns.
