Warriors Win High Quality Game

The Warriors defeated the Rabbitohs 10-8 today in a high quality SG Ball Cup game at Redfern Oval. Both sides played an NRL style game plan.

A decent crowd filled the grandstand at Redfern including Rabbitohs players from all grades. Hame Sele was there to watch his brother Junior. We also saw Taane Milne, Junior Tatola, Jacob Host, Josiah Karapani, Ethan O’Neill and Romano Cook.

Champion On And Off The Field

Warriors coach Adam Blair graciously came up to our commentary position for a pre game chat about his team. We thanked him for his time and can now report that Blairy is an absoulute champion off the field as well as on it.

Standouts

The Rabbitohs wingers were standouts, Tyrone Munro opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of play after some clever ball work. Five-eight Leroy Murray dug into the line to create space for Dane Towns to send Munro diving over.

Warriors hooker Etuate Fukofuka was among the best players on the field. He showed amazing skill to regather his own kick to score in the 11th minute.

Special mention goes to prop Tanner Stowers-Smith, lock Leka Halisima and fullback Ratu Saimone Nabrisi who were all outstanding for the visitors.

The home side hit back in the 20th minute when Drew Williams caught a nice long ball from halfback Brent Hawkins.

Dynamic winger Sio Kali was everywhere today. In the 30th minute he pounced on a Salesi Piliu kick to give his team a lead that they would not surrender again.

Haizyn Mellars was one of Souths best with some strong carrys. He created a lot of second phase play with some quality offloads. Mellars almost stole the win with a spectacular leap in the corner but the ball was jolted free from his hands as he put it down.

Defence Won The Game

The Warriors goal line defence won them the game. The young Souths boys applied plenty of pressure late but were turned away time and time again.

The Warriors bench players gave their team an impact that Souths just couldn’t quite match.

Souths were fantastic in attack and defence at times. 4 missed goals and 2 disallowed tries cost them victory in the end.

No points were scored in the second half.

In The Stands

Before the game we met Ben Le Blanc, father of Liam then after the full-time we had a good chat to Haizyns’ parents Vince and Charmain Mellars. At half-time we were joined by Shannon Donato from the Rabbitohs for a live interview.

Before packing up Mavo managed to shoot a couple of ‘Shorts’ featuring Junior Sele, Haizyn Mellars, Mathew Newman, Max Laing and Liam Aarons.
