Light At The End Of The Tunnel

By Josh Kemp for Bunnies TV.

This has been the season we didn’t expect. Despite our poor second half to last season there was plenty of hope that we turn it around. In hindsight it was blind faith.

It didn’t take long for us to see that there was going to be plenty of hurt this season. I don’t think many of us saw that it was going to be this bad.

In the space of 12 months we have gone from the penthouse to the outhouse. It’s been a dramatic fall.

How?

From conceding 13 points a game to conceding well over 30 points a game. How does it get so bad so quick?

I don’t think there is one real answer. No doubt there will be plenty of finger pointing. We have already seen the coach sacked and Ben Hornby (Assistant coach) made the interim coach.

Are there bigger issues though? Quite simply the answer is yes.

From the stands it seems as though there are fitness issues. This isn’t something of a recent thing either. It has been there from the start of the season.

Sure injuries have really hurt. Last 2 weeks we have been lucky to just have enough to field a side. In fact against the Dragons reinforcements were called for.

Despite that we still have the likes of Cody, Latrell, Cookie, Wighton, Keaon, Jai and Tom Burgess all available. That’s 7 representatives.

Whilst last weekend we were close on the scoreboard, we just look so far away from the rest of the competition. Don’t kid yourself, the Cowboys are an ordinary side.

Sure there were moments in that game. We have seen moments in most games we have played this year. We just don’t have the consistency. The ability to compete the entire 80.

The Difference

In the previous 2 weeks we have conceded points either side of halftime. The last couple of minutes of the half has been an Achilles Heel for us the previous 18 months. Last week it ended up being the difference in the game.

One thing I did like last week was the fight the boys showed at the end of the game to give ourselves every chance to win. Unfortunately a missed conversion from Latrell and a poor final play summed up our season.

It is hard to see how we get out of this for the rest of the year.

The Light

However, we all saw the light at the end of the tunnel yesterday (Tuesday) morning. With the announcement of the return of Wayne Bennett as our head coach from next season.

It will be interesting to see if this has an affect on the team for the remainder of the season.

We can all concede this season is over. Unfortunately we won’t be playing finals footy. I think what we want to see if for us to avoid the wooden spoon. To now turn the season around and put pride back in the jersey.

Compete

With a stack of players due back in the back end of the season we should be competing each week.

Whilst we know there will be key changes for next season, we still need something to show for this season. It all starts this Saturday night.

This week we come up against another side with their backs to the wall. Indigenous round where previously we have had a great record. It’s a game where despite our injuries we should be right in this game.
