Uncool Dad’s Bunnies TV Round 7 Recap

As sure as the Suncorp Stadium surface crumbles underfoot the NRL season of 2023 keeps on producing. The grass at Suncorp is going to finish up looking like Parramatta Rd after Magic Round concludes in Round 10! Anyway, that’s another story. Let’s get back to the footy as there’s plenty to talk about once again. Every side bar the Tigers and possibly the Cowboys are up for the fight and every game is tough to win and of course hard to tip. Let’s recap Round 7…

Thursday

Thursday nights aren’t a good night for my Rabbitohs, we haven’t won in that slot for quite a while for whatever reason. Needless to say, I was pretty nervous going into the game against the Dolphins. They’d been impressive so far and I knew the old gunslinger Bennett would have been super keen to knock off his old team. Mind you, when I’d seen Andrew Johns had tipped the Dolphins in the Herald I was feeling slightly better. Great player, poor judge.

Onto the match and the Dolphins started on fire, scoring after only a couple of minutes. The new team continued on in this fashion throughout the first half and went to the break 14-6. The Dolphins were definitely on top but Souths had at least remained in the fight. Things flipped in the second half as the Rabbitohs turned it on. Our forwards, particularly young Davy Moale, really exerted their dominance which paved the way for our stars to carve up the home side.

It’s a double-edged sword the Thursday night game but when your team can win it really sets you up for a positive weekend! The Dolphins aren’t a top side but they’ve proved that they’re hard to beat and will be around the top 8. I was really impressed that my Bunnies could outlast them and show their class.

Friday

Two pretty even clashes were on the bill for Friday night. First up was the Sharkies hosting the Roosters at Shark Park. The Roosters were last start winners and had a few players back. They were expected to do well but the Sharks, still stinging from their capitulation against NZ two weeks ago, had other ideas. The Sharkies rode the wave created by their boisterous home crowd and outplayed their more fancied rivals. More sin-binnings for the Roosters in what was a pretty disappointing performance for the much-hyped side. Serves me right for tipping them.

Another form reversal occurred out at Brookvale when the Sea-Eagles who had been ordinary in the last few weeks came to play. The Storm, on the other hand, who were starting to look like world beaters previously, came out pretty flat. A feral Manly crowd was only accepting one result here and got their team home. You could tell how much it inspired the players and showed how important a home crowd can be.

Saturday

Another three massive crowds at the games on Saturday. People are really getting into their footy this year and are getting behind the effort that most teams are showing. First up was a very tight one at Mt Smart where the Warriors continued on their winning way against North Queensland.

The Cowboys appeared desperate because well, they are. They were up for it but their attack was far too disjointed and the Warriors were simply better.. Another impressive win from the Kiwi side.

In game 2, a bumper crowd was there to get behind their boys at Newcastle as they took on the premiers. What a performance from Newcastle! They were outstanding against the Panthers and I thought were the better side. Penrith were a bit off their game but they were only allowed to play as well as the Knights let them.

It was only the class of Cleary that got them home in golden point, otherwise it should have been a Newcastle win. I hate to think what Wests fans think as Jackson Hastings leads his new side round the park expertly.

Knights v Panthers highlights.

Another game of two differing halves, also at Suncorp, saw the Broncos overpower the Titans. The improving Gold Coast side were on top in the first half only for the Broncos to be too good in the second, Once again, Brisbane got by on their talent which of course they have in bucketloads. It may not be as easy against the NRL’s best. We will see…

Titans v Broncos highlights.

Sunday

Off to the nation’s capital where Canberra took on the Dragons. The Raiders had a few stars back and were looking to build on last week’s awesome upset win against Brisbane. Of course, things never work as they should at Canberra and they ended up being 4-0 down at the half. At this stage, it was a real bludger of a game as both sides got into a ‘drop the ball’ contest.

The intensity lifted in the second, and the Raiders were good enough to grab the win. There really wasn’t much in it though. The Dragons are in a real holding pattern with their coaching situation and lack desire to win. I wonder if Canberra would have beaten many others on this performance.

A blockbuster to finish the round with the traditional Canterbury versus Parramatta clash. Another fantastic crowd was there to see this awesome Sydney battle. The Bulldogs tried hard like they do but it ended up being an easy kill for the Eels. The amount of injuries Canterbury have is becoming a bit on the ridiculous side and they can only do so much. Still, another win for the Eels and they’re doing ok considering their atrocious early draw.
