Rugby Leagues Heroes Of Yesterday – A Call From Dan
Footy cards have been around for as long as I can remember. As a youngster I would buy a pack of cards, eat the chewing gum then check out which players I had uncovered.
I never really collected the cards, I saw them as more of a novelty with ‘chewy’ as a bonus.
During my career I appeared on 2 footy cards (1987 & 88) and a sticker (1992) and it’s for that reason that I got a call last year from Daniel Pain of Dan’s NRL Collectables. Dan wanted to include me in his new book Rugby League’s Heroes Of Yesterday Book 3.

Dan’s NRL Collectables
Dan Pain is a long time collector who boasts an extensive collection of rugby league memorabilia. It has been reported that he owns 29,211 cards, and that’s not counting duplicates.
Pain has turned his love of collecting into an online store.

Dan’s NRL Collectables is a Sole Trader run business by Dan Pain. This began in 2001 with an online eBay store operating as Dan’s NRL Collectables which boasts more than 10,000 positive feedback records.
Interviewed By Dan
I met with Dan in June 2022 at Club Redfern. Dan was there with a few mates that included former NRL players Brett Clark, Allan Fallah and Paul Morris.

After a couple of beers Dan and I left the group to sit down in the privacy of the club’s boardroom for a chat about my footy story. I spoke for over a hour, enjoyed the time and Dan recorded the conversation.
Dan would later send me his article to fact check which I did. I have to say he did an excellent job and I look forward to seeing the words in the print of Book 3.
Prior to my chat with Dan Pain, he went through the same process with my Bunnies TV co-host and former teammate Darren Brown. They met in the Sydney CBD early in 2022 for an interview to be included in the same book as me, the 3rd edition of his book series.

I asked Dan how many Souths players are in the new book and he said “Mate this edition has heaps of Rabbitohs. Barry Wood, Gary Wright, Bernie Lowther, Ian Roberts, Michael Pobjie, Steve Mavin, Darren Brown, Ross Harrington and Ian Barkley who had a stint at Souths”.

The Book Launch
Everyone is welcome to the book launch that will be held at 3pm on the 15th of April at Wests Ashfield Leagues Sports Bar.
Confirmed guests include Johnny Lewis, Kerry Hemsley, Bruiser Clark and a host of other stars. I’ll be there too.

Dan has created special edition cards of each player that appears in the book. I have never seen the photo he used for my card. Browny had never seen his picture either.

Rugby Leagues Heroes Of Yesterday
By Steve Mavin for Bunnies TV.

Interesting to put a face to a name. The best book I have for card collecting is a book he wrote in 2008-‘100years of Australian rugby league cards’. Excellent book for use as a checklist if you are a collector. I have been able to tick of a few but still have a lot of old Souths cards to go.
